EMDR Therapy Online: What Virtual Treatment Offers

Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing, or EMDR therapy, is a type of psychotherapy used to treat PTSD. Many practices now offer EMDR therapy online. The major difference between standard offline EMDR therapy and online EMDR therapy is that online sessions are conducted virtually.

Session Method Differences

In virtual sessions, therapists use the same treatment methods as in standard sessions. The principles and phases of EMDR do not change.

Delivery methods used in online EMDR can differ from those used in in-person EMDR. In an in-person EMDR therapy session in San Francisco, the therapist uses hand-held vibrating tappers or taps on the patient’s arms or legs to deliver bilateral stimulation.

When EMDR is done online, the therapist may use a software or require the patient to tap themselves on their legs or arms.

Many therapists use a virtual light bar and an additional auditory component so they can engage the patient with both sight and sound.

In online EMDR, patients may need 1-3 sessions to reassess their goals and familiarize themselves with the new treatment delivery setup.

The Benefit of Online

There are several benefits of online sessions. Patients do not have to drive to their therapist’s office and can consult them virtually in the comfort of their own home.

This is more important than many people realize. EMDR involves processing negative experiences. People are usually more comfortable and feel relaxed and safe in a familiar setting.

Online EMDR can make therapy accessible and affordable. For people living in remote areas, a trip to their therapist could mean lots of money towards fuel expenses. For such people, online EMDR can be the best option, allowing them to consult their therapist from virtually anywhere.

People with limited mobility and those who are completely housebound often face difficulties seeing their therapist. Many are unable to stay in therapy and are unable to get the treatment they need. Online EMDR therapy can help such people stay in and successfully complete therapy.

Many insurance providers cover online therapy just as they would an in-person session. If you are considering giving online EMDR a try, check with your insurance provider if they cover online sessions.

You will need a reliable internet connection and a device (can be a mobile, tablet, laptop or desktop) to consult your therapist online. Before signing up for online EMDR, make sure you have access to an area where you can talk to your therapist without worrying about someone overhearing your conversations.
