FAQs

If you have questions about C-PTSD therapy or how we can help you recover, we are happy to answer them. Here are a few questions we answer for our clients.

What Is Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (C-PTSD)?

Complex post-traumatic stress disorder occurs when someone has experienced frequent or prolonged exposure to significant stress or trauma. If you’ve been diagnosed with C-PTSD, you may experience flashbacks and a hyper-awareness of your surroundings. You may also wrestle with your identity, emotions, and relationship connections. While not everyone who undergoes trauma will have C-PTSD or the same degree of symptoms, the effects of trauma can manifest over time.

How Does C-PTSD Differ From Traditional PTSD?

Most people are aware of PTSD and its symptoms, but they are unfamiliar with C-PTSD. Although these disorders have similarities, there are more symptoms associated with C-PTSD, such as self-esteem issues, behavioral impulses, and interpersonal difficulties. PTSD often occurs from one traumatic event, while C-PTSD is related to prolonged trauma, such as war, abuse, or domestic violence. The symptoms that accompany C-PTSD are often more severe and may include behavioral impulses, aggression, and relationship issues.

What Are the Common Causes or Triggers of C-PTSD?

C-PTSD is often related to traumatic events such as childhood abuse, human trafficking, or sexual assault. Survivors of war or long-term neglect may also develop C-PTSD. Symptoms may not show up until later in life, especially if you’ve suffered from childhood abuse or neglect. However, it’s not unusual for children or adolescents to experience symptoms immediately. Recognizing the signs and seeking help is an important step. If you’re exposed to prolonged traumatic situations like these, you may feel trapped or powerless in these situations, triggering the onset of C-PTSD.

How Is C-PTSD Treated, and Is Recovery Possible?

Yes! You should know that recovery from C-PTSD is possible, and many people find healing through treatment. We use a combination of therapies to treat symptoms, including eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), Internal Family Systems (IFS), brainspotting, and somatic therapy. During treatment, we aim to help clients process their trauma and guide them through healthy symptom management. This is a long process, and we understand each client will experience improvements differently. With the proper treatment, you can improve your quality of life as we help you move forward. Our therapists will work diligently to ensure you have the combination of therapies that meets your needs and will help you healthily process your trauma.
